@CanesRowing Opens Spring vs. UConn
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing program is set to begin its 2015 spring season Wednesday with a scrimmage against UConn.
The Hurricanes and Huskies will face off in a series of 750m pieces on the Indian Creek waterway in Miami Beach, Fla. Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m., with boats launching from the home of Miami rowing, the Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center. The 1V8+ and 2V8+ will race towards the finish line area near the 5300 block of Indian Creek Drive, while the 4+ boats will race north of the 71st street bridge.
“The team has been working really hard over the winter,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “They’ve put a lot of meters in on the ergometer and have been training hard and we are looking to apply that to on the water speed.”
Wednesday’s scrimmage will give the Hurricanes a chance to get on the water against another school as they get ready for their first official race of the 2015 championship season. Miami will face Columbia in a head-to-head setting on Saturday in Fellsmere, Fla.
“It’s a scrimmage and we might test some lineups out,” Sanderson said. “When you lineup against a competitor that isn’t intrasquad, it’s an environment that can’t be duplicated in practice. We are looking forward to the opportunity to get racing experience against another team.”
After facing UConn and Columbia in a pair of competitive environments this week, the Canes will head to San Diego to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic in the final weekend of March.
“We are trying to have our student-athletes improve a little bit every day,” Sanderson said. “That daily improvement is something we stress as important. We have a good group of student-athletes that joined us in September and a good group of novice athletes that are learning the sport and those two groups have come in and joined our returners and mixed together well. Now it’s about putting the training to use and continuing to develop and get faster throughout the racing season. It’s always exciting to lineup on a start line against competition and see what you can do.”
Miami will also row in the Knecht Cup and April 11-12 and face off against UCF on April 25 in preparation for the ACC Championships on May 15-16.
“We are training to be our best at the ACC Championships,” Sanderson said. “We have to manage our training and make steady improvement as we go through the season and focus on peaking when we get to ACCs.”
