Swimming Ends Successful Trip to GT Invite

ATLANTA – The Miami Hurricanes swimming team wrapped up its run at the 2014 Georgia Tech Invitational Saturday, finishing with 348 points across the weekend-long competition.

“We had a great meet. I’m so happy and proud of them,” head coach Andy Kershaw said. “We saw a lot of great racing and competing.”

Sophomore Cameron Davis (1650-yard freestyle), senior Heather Arseth (100 freestyle) and sophomore Julia Schippert (200 breastsroke) were among those who impressed in preliminaries.

Davis finished in a time of 10:14.71, Arseth in 50.32 and Schippert in 2:18.31.

Miami had three qualifiers in the 100 free – Arseth, junior My Fridell (50.89 – B final) and freshman Rebeka Repman (51.90 – C).

“100 free did really well this morning – they all swam really well tonight,” said Kershaw, who credited Miami’s strong finish on Friday as a source of momentum Saturday.

Schippert was joined by senior Amy Wiley, who earned a spot in the C final with a time of 2:22.59.

Schippert was one of a number of Hurricanes who shaved off time in the finals.

“Julia had a great swim this morning, and made a couple of adjustments and went even faster tonight,” Kershaw said.

Schippert’s performance was indicative of Miami’s performance as a team throughout the weekend.

“I thought they did a really good job making adjustments in the meet, from prelims to finals and race-to-race making some adjustments that made a big difference,” Kershaw said.

Friday’s strong showing, which included a time of 1:48.69 in the 200 free from Julie Suarez – one of the top times in school history – concluded with a fifth-place finish in the 800 free relay. Saturday’s finals ended with a fifth-place showing in the 400 free relay, as Suarez, Repman, Fridell and Arseth delivered a time of 3:22.81.

“It was a great meet for our team,” Kershaw concluded. “Our team showed a lot of fight. I’m proud of the way they competed this weekend.”
