Cross Country Set for WA Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami cross country program will compete in the Westminster Academy Invitational Saturday.
The 5K race Saturday night will serve as the Canes’ final competitive run before they head to the ACC Championships on Oct. 31. Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths believes the Hurricanes continue to progress as they look to peak at the conference meet.
“This is our last tune-up before ACCs next week,” Griffiths said. “We are getting healthy at the right time and having some consistency at practices.”
Miami has 17 student-athletes, seven men and 10 women, registered to compete in Saturday evening’s races. The women’s 5K is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., while the men will hit the course at 6 p.m.
Gabrielle Hesslau is the Cane to watch on the women’s side. The sophomore has been Miami’s top finisher in each race she has ran this season. Most recently, Hesslau posted the 10th-best women’s 6K time in school history, completing the Paul Short Run in 22:49.
On the men’s side, seniors Douglas Dourado and JaCee Jarnagin provide experience and leadership for a talented group. Dourado has been Miami’s top runner this season, posting the bets men’s time from a Hurricane in each of his four races.
