@CanesRowing Wraps Up Head of the Charles
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Miami rowing team closed out its stay at the 50th Head of the Charles Sunday.
The Hurricanes, who had two entries in the 2014 edition of the Head of the Charles, competed in the women’s Championship 4+ event Sunday afternoon. Miami placed 12th out of 17 with a time of 19:22.465.
“They had a good race and I felt they handled the conditions well,” Miami head coach Dave Sanderson said. “Like the other boat yesterday, they were able to implement specific focus points from practice in the race. Overall, we had a great weekend of racing in Boston and can’t wait to come back next year with more boats.”
The Championship 4+ boat was coxed by freshman Nicole Rotkovitz, while freshman Taegan Lynch sat in the stroke seat, followed by juniors Hannah Nielsen, Sarah Aschebrock and Caitlin Lowe.
The Head of the Charles Regatta is widely acclaimed as the world’s largest two-day rowing event, drawing over 9,000 athletes around the world to compete in 55 different race events. Boats racing in the Head of the Charles compete against one another and the clock.
On Saturday, Miami’s entry in the Club 4+ event raced against the clock and 58 other boats on Saturday, posting a time of 19:08.317 to place 11th overall. Miami’s time was seventh-best among collegiate boats.
“The crew executed their race plan and had a great row,” Sanderson said. “ They successfully addressed a few things they had been working on in practice and it really showed. Ultimately, they got 11th out of 59 and a fast enough time to get UM a guaranteed entry in the event next year, an awesome result!”
The Club 4+ boat was coxed by junior Meghan Hamilton. Senior Devon Phelan-Patton sat in the stroke seats, followed by freshman Jane Moore, sophomore Marguerite Bandeian and sophomore Catherine Tayler.
Following the Head of the Charles, Miami will close out its fall season at the Head of the Hooch regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. A year ago, the Canes earned four Top 10 finishes including two wins, a second place finish and an eighth place finish. They will look to improve on their previous success in this year’s Head of the Hooch, scheduled for November 1-2.
