Sophomore Secures Individual Top-10 Finish
Wilmette, Ill. – The Hurricanes completed play at the Windy City Collegiate Classic this morning for the third and final round.
Miami’s first round Monday left the team tied for first, but the course at Westmoreland Country Club was hard to tame in rounds two and three.
Head coach Patti Rizzo believes the cool temperatures at Westmoreland may have played a role in the team’s performances in the last two rounds. Yet, Rizzo thinks the team needs to respond positively to challenges.
“Maybe we are only good players in warm weather. Every time it’s cold they play poorly,” Rizzo explained. “They need to learn to handle adversity better. Golf is always unpredictable.”
The Canes finished the tournament in 13th (912).
Daniela Darquea entered play Tuesday in contention for first in the player leaderboard, finishing her first two rounds in second place. Her first round score of 69 was just three strokes shy of the course record, which was set later in the day by Tulane’s Emily Penttila.
The sophomore battled throughout the afternoon, including converting seven-consecutive pars. She finished the afternoon +3 and tied for tenth, capturing her first top-10 finish of the season.
Leticia Ras-Anderica completed day three with her best round of the tournament (+3), while registering four pars and two birdies, finishing the tournament with an overall score of +16.
Kailey Walsh (+11) also had two birdies, finishing the third round three strokes over par.
In total, the Hurricanes finished the final round with six combined birdies.
Miami returns to the course this weekend at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, beginning Sunday, Oct. 12 through Tuesday, Oct. 14.
