Wagner & Lileikite Upset No. 6 Doubles Team
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Stephanie Wagner and Lina Lileikite upset the sixth-ranked doubles team in the nation on Saturday, beating Auburn’s Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans in the semifinal of the orange doubles flight.
The day began with a continuation of the first round of singles from Friday afternoon. The first singles match to be completed was 18th-ranked Miami’s Wagner who overpowered her University of Pittsburgh opponent Amber Washington by a final score of 6-1 and 6-1.
On one of the next courts over, Miami’s Clementina Riobueno handled her opponent in a similar fashion, defeating North Florida’s Esther Zuniga in straight sets 6-2 and 6-4.
After rallying back and forth in a long first set, Miami’s Lileikite would come out on top with a score of 6-4. After that, Lileikite came out victorious in the second set over her University of South Florida opponent Olaya Garido, 6-1.
111th-ranked Miami’s Monique Albuquerque took care of business against North Florida’s Quetzali Vazquez, handing her a 6-3, 6-3 loss.
Miami freshman Silvia Fuentes showed up against Pittsburgh’s senior Molly Wickman, defeating her by scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
In a matchup of two freshmen, Miami’s Wendy Zhang defeated Auburn’s Mary Katherine Lewis in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
In a hard fought battle, Baylor’s freshman Eliza Long came out on top over Miami’s freshman Judith Bohnenkamp with scores of 6-2, 6-2.
In the most impressive result of the day, Miami’s doubles team of Wagner and Lileikite upset sixth-ranked Auburn tandem of Flickinger and Burgmans to advance to the final round of the orange bracket. They take on fellow University of Miami teammates, and third ranked Monique Albuquerque and Clementine Riobueno. This final round thriller was cut short due to the thunderstorms. The score of the match currently sits at 5-6 in favor of Wagner and Lileikite.
Miami’s freshman team of Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan also advanced to the green brackets final round to face Auburn’s tandem of Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler, after defeating Esther Zuniga and Quetzali Vazquez of UNF, 8-5 in the semifinal round. This match was cut short due to the weather.
Both of these doubles matches will remain playing Sunday morning at 8 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
In the green bracket, Miami’s Silvia Fuentes and Judith Bohnenkamp fell to Auburn’s Mary Katherine Lewis and Andrea Dikosavljevic by a final score of 3-8. Unfortunately, after advancing to the consolation semifinals round, they were defeated in a close match, 8-7 (7-4), by a special combination team of Molly Wickman (Pittsburgh) and Michelle Valdez (North Florida).
Saturday at the Miami Fall Invite will be a jam-packed day with more rounds of doubles and singles to finish the tournament. Play will begin at 8 a.m Sunday.
The second day of the Miami Fall Invite was once again cut short due to inclement weather. The first round of singles and second round of doubles were completed today. However, play was stopped during the final round of doubles.
