Dourado and Hesslau Win at FAU Invitational
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Douglas Dourado and Gabrielle Hesslau came away victorious at the FAU Collegiate Invitational.
Miami opened the season with a dual meet against FAU and the Canes started the 2014 campaign strong, earning a victory in both the men’s 5K and the women’s 5K.
“It was good to see Gabby and Douglas step up and win the individual titles today,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “They have continued to take strides forward since the spring.
Dourado won the men’s 5K with a time of 16:27.1. The senior was one of four Canes to finish in the Top 5 on the men’s side, joined by freshman Adam George (third, 16:34.7), sophomore Jon Keller (fourth, 16:41.0), and freshman Sean Grossman (fifth, 16:44.3).
“The men ran controlled for the first two miles,” Griffiths said. “I would have liked to keep the pack spread closer until the finish.”
Hesslau crossed the finish line first in the women’s 5K, posting a time of 19:55.7. The sophomore was joined in the Top 5 by freshman Mulloy Manning, who places fourth with a time of 21:28.8.
“We were without several of the top ladies this evening, but this allowed younger runners like Mulloy to shine,” Griffiths said. “I look forward to getting back to work and seeing improvment next week in Tampa.”
Seven other Canes competed in Friday’s opener. AJ Ricketts, JaCee Jarnagin and Kevin Marsh ran for the men, while Janine DePree, Megan Brown, Kelly Williamson and Kailtin Hill represented the women.
The Hurricanes are back in action on Friday, Sept. 5 at the USF Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
