S&D Pulls In Two Prestigious Academic Awards

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming and diving team received two prestigious academic awards from The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), it was announced this week.

Miami qualified for the Team Scholar All-American Award after the Hurricanes posted a collective grade point average of 3.32 this past semester.

“As a staff, it makes us so proud of our student-athletes,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “This is a reward for the sacrifices they make, and the focus they display on a daily basis.”

The Team Scholar All American Award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester and again in the spring.

“We require a lot from them at the pool, and I know their professors are doing the same in the classroom,” Kershaw said. “It’s such a key attribute that they are able to succeed in both.”

In addition to the team award, rising senior All-America diver Kara McCormack was recognized with Scholar All-America recognition. A mathematics major and 2014 All-ACC Academic Team selection, McCormack earned All-America honors in both the platform and 1-meter this past spring.

The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.

“This is the ultimate award for a student-athlete, because it requires an elite performance in academics and on the boards,” Kershaw said.
