@CanesRowing Has Five Named All-ACC Academic

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Five members of the University of Miami Rowing program were among the 53 student-athletes named to the 2014 All-ACC Academic team.

Sarah Aschebrock, Meghan Hamilton, Breanna Hayton, Caitlin Lowe and Alison Whitty were the five Hurricanes selected from selected from a record pool of 173 nominees from the ACC’s eight schools who sponsor rowing, an impressive average of 21.6 nominees per school. To be nominated for the All-ACC Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools.

“It’s exciting to have five honorees for the ACC-All Academic team,” head rowing coach Dave Sanderson said. “Sarah, Meghan, Breanna, Caitlin and Ally are all so hard working; it is great for them to be recognized.”

Hayton is the only four-time honoree on the 2014 All-ACC Academic team. A second team All-ACC selection, Hayton is also one of 14 student-athletes to earn All-ACC and All-ACC Academic honors for the 2014 season. The Victoria, B.C, Canada, native is one of the most decorated rowers in the history of the University of Miami. She is a three-time All-ACC selection, a two-time CRCA South All-Region honoree and a two-time CRCA National Scholar Athlete. She was also one of two nominees from the ACC for the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.

“It is a true accomplishment for Breanna to be recognized for four years,” Sanderson said. “She is a remarkable student-athlete and a wonderful representative of the University of Miami.” 

Aschebrock earned her first All-ACC Academic honor. A 2014 CRCA Scholar Athlete, Aschebrock helped the Canes place first in the Championship 8+ and Open 8+ at the 2013 Head of the Hooch and was part of the 1V8+ at the ACC Championships. A native of North Shore, New Zealand, Aschebrock is majoring in criminology.

Hamilton is also an All-ACC Academic selection for the first time. The junior coxed Miami’s 1V8+ in the final three regattas of the 2014 season, leading the Canes to a pair of victories at the UCF Invitational. A native of Davie, Fla., Hamilton is majoring in exercise physiology.

Lowe picked up her second academic honor of the 2013-14 season. A 2014 CRCA Scholar Athlete, Lowe earned All-ACC Academic honors for the first time in her collegiate career. The sophomore was a member of Miami’s 1V8+ all season, helping the Canes place first in the Championship 8+ and Open 8+ at the 2013 Head of the Hooch and to a pair of victories at the UCF Invitational. A native of Alexandra, New Zealand, Lowe is majoring in exercise physiology.

Whitty is the final of Miami’s four first-time All-ACC Academic honorees. The sophomore helped the Canes place first in the Championship 8+ and Open 8+ at the 2013 Head of the Hooch, as well as to a pair of victories at the UCF Invitational. A native of St. Catahrines, Ontario, Canada, Whitty is majoring in sport administration.
