Start of ACC Rowing Championship Pushed Back

CLEMSON, S.C. — The University of Miami rowing program travels to South Carolina for the first two-day ACC Rowing Championship regatta in conference history.

Originally scheduled to begin Friday at 6 p.m., the opening session of the 2014 ACC Rowing Championships will be delayed until 7:15 p.m. due to a forecast of high wind on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. Previously held on a single day, the 2014 ACC Rowing Championship marks the first time in conference history that there will be seeding heats and finals over a two-day span.

The addition of Notre Dame and Syracuse has expanded the ACC Rowing Championship from four races to a total of 13 races–two heats for all but the Third Varsity Eight on Friday evening beginning at 6 p.m. and concluding with Grand Final for the 3V8 and a Petite and a Grand Final for the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four events on Saturday morning beginning at 8:02 a.m. There is no charge for admission.

“As the ACC Rowing has expanded, the Championship has expanded to the fairest format of heats and finals,” Sanderson said. “I feel like this championship format is spot on and set up with the athletes’ experience in mind.”

The Hurricanes will race in the 1V8+, 2V8+ and V4+ categories, competing against Boston College, Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia and the host Clemson Tigers. This year’s conference regatta marks the 12th time that Clemson has hosted the ACC Rowing Championships on Lake Hartwell.

Miami has experience on Lake Hartwell, competing in the Clemson Invitational in mid-April. The Canes have put together increasingly improved performances, including very competitive times in the First Varsity Eight (6:36.8) and Second Varsity Eight (6:44.49) in a regatta at Central Florida on April 25. A return to familiar waters could benefit the Hurricanes as they look to put together a strong showing at the conference championship regatta.

“It’s exciting to finally get to race at ACCs,” Sanderson said. “We’ve had some good preparation the last couple of weeks and we are excited to build off our last racing experience as we go against our ACC counterparts.”

The Canes will hit the water Friday evening for heats. The V4+ will be the first boat to race, scheduled to race at 7:25 p.m., out of Lane 5 in Heat 2. The 2V8+ will race at 7:45 p.m., out of Lane 4 in Heat 2. The 1V8+ will race at 8:05 p.m., out of Lane 4 in Heat 2. All three boats will battle for one of the six coveted spots in the grand final for their respective category. Boats that do not reach the grand final will race in the petite final on Saturday morning.

Saturday’s Championship action will be video streamed by TheACC.com with Dean Linke providing the play-by-play and Steve Pritzker handling the analysis.
