S&D Adds Three More Medals on Day Three
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Miami swimming and diving teams picked up three more medals at the 2014 ACC Championships Friday, as divers Sam Dorman, Lindsey Lester and Kara McCormack all delivered medal-winning performances.
Dorman earned the night’s first medal, capturing second place in the 1-meter event with a final score of 422.1. It was the second medal of the Championships for Dorman, who narrowly missed out on beating Duke Olympian Nick McCroy (425.7).
“Sam had a great competition and nearly knocked off Nick, one of the greatest divers in NCAA history,” head coach Randy Ableman said. “This will boost his confidence and motivate Sam heading into the NCAA Championships in March.”
McCormack captured her first medal on the weekend with 372.5 points in the 3-meter, earning her a silver medal. The Austin, Texas native and reigning ACC Women’s Diver of the Year delivered the best performance of her career in the event.
“Kara was very consistent. She performed a new dive in the finals and nailed it,” Ableman said. “This was her highest finish in the 3-meter at ACC’s.”
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the night came from Lindsay Lester, who earned third place in the 3-meter. The bronze medal marked the career-first for the San Jose, Calif., native.
“This was Lindsay’s first trip to the podium in her final ACC Championships,” Ableman said. “Coming back from a double wrist surgery and a rough day yesterday made today even sweeter.”
Cheyenne Cousineau took seventh in the event with a score of 354.10.
On the swimming end, sophomore My Fridell captured first place in the “B” final of the 100-yard butterfly (53.54), freshman Julia Schippert took sixth in the “C” final of the 100 breast (1:03.19),
Miami is ranked eighth as a team in the women’s combined scores, and first in the men’s diving scores.
“Today was a great day for the Canes,” Ableman said.
The final day of the Championship starts on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and 200 butterfly. Men’s platform diving prelims and finals start at 1 p.m., with the women’s platform prelims starting at 4:30 p.m. and finishing with the finals at approximately 8:20 p.m. The swimming finals, including the 1650 freestyle, start at 7 p.m.
