NCAA Tournament Tuesdays: 2011 Men's Tennis
| 2011 Men’s Tennis The Hurricanes’ most recent trip to the NCAA Tournament came in 2011 after a 14-8 regular season. The Canes tennis team started the season ranked No. 44 in the nation, but as the season progressed, they showed the nation they were a force to be reckoned with. Key wins versus No. 28 Florida State and No. 16 Georgia Tech propelled the Canes team to a ranking of No. 27, as well as a berth in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, No. 27 University of Miami faced No. 41 Nebraska in a grueling matchup. With the score tied at 3-3, freshman Gabriel Flores had the last match of the day that would decide the fate of the Canes’ season. An intense three-set match resulted in the Hurricanes as victors. In the second round, the men’s tennis team was set to compete against No. 8 Florida. UM’s season came to an end with a 4-0 loss. The 2011 Miami men’s tennis team put up a hard fight throughout the season, accomplishing a 15-win season and gaining an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for the 26th time since 1977. The 2011 team was an experienced squad with five seniors and a junior, mentoring and guiding four freshmen on the team. One freshman in particular, Flores, recorded a 20-win season in his first year as a Hurricane. Senior standouts Carl Sundberg and Eduardo Pavia also reached 20-plus singles wins in the 2011 season. Following the conclusion of the season, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association recognized assistant coach C.J. Weber as the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. The exceptional coaching staff and the talented players of the 2011 tennis team are credited for earning their way into the NCAA Tournament and the success of the season. |
During the 2011 season, head coach Mario Rincon guided the Canes to a 15-win season and a second round NCAA Tournament finish. Rincon was a standout tennis player: he was recognized as an NCAA All- American in college, spent nine years on the ATP tour, as well as five years on the Japanese pro tour. Rincon took over the Miami men’s tennis program as head coach in 2004, leading the Hurricanes to four NCAA Tournament berths since then. |
