Pair of URowers Named All-ACC

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s rowing program had two members of its Varsity 8+ selected to the All-ACC rowing team.

Senior Katalin Horvath and junior Breanna Hayton earned All-ACC honors after helping guide the Hurricanes to the best season in program history. The Canes placed fourth at the ACC Rowing Championships this past weekend, up two spots from a year ago. Horvath and Hayton helped Miami’s Varsity 8+ finished fourth in their race at the ACC Championships to cap a strong season. The Hurricanes claimed the Cal Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic in early April.

Horvath earned All-ACC accolades for the third consecutive season. The senior graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in marine science on Saturday before traveling to the ACC Championships. Horvath has spent the past four years rowing for the Miami Varsity. Although a decorated small-boat and sculling athlete, Horvath has been racing in the Varsity 8+ at Miami since her freshman year. Horvath strokes the V8+ and has filled that role since fall of 2012.

“Kata is one of the first graduates we’ve had since I arrived at Miami,” rowing coach Andrew Carter said. “She has had a huge impact on the new direction and successes of our program.  With this being her third All-ACC honor, it’s no secret that she’s been one of the examples to follow on our team.”

Hayton was named All-ACC for the second consecutive season. A native of Victoria, B.C., Canada, Hayton is a key member of Miami’s top crew and has rowed with the varsity since arriving at Miami as a freshman for the 2010-11 season. She helped the Canes reach the podium at the 2013 San Diego Crew Classic and was instrumental in Miami’s success at the 2013 ACC Rowing Championships.

“Breanna has certainly been a rock on this team both on and off the water,” Carter said. “She has been not only one of our top performers over the past couple of years but also one of our most consistent performers by any measure.  She has certainly earned her second All-ACC award.”

Beyond their stellar performance in the water, Horvath and Hayton provide leadership by example to the rest of their team. The example the two standouts set is valued immensely by Carter and his staff.

“Both Breanna and Kata are known on our roster to be among our best boat-movers and if any member of our squad were asked to provide an example of how we do things at Miami, one or both of their names will come up,” Carter said.
