Canes Rowing Set for Home Regatta
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s rowing program will host its final home regatta of the season this weekend. SMU, UCF and Old Dominion will join the Canes in three separate racing sessions over two days.
Racing is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, but the Hurricanes will host a special boat dedication ceremony prior to the first race. The boat dedication will honor Greg Wilson, a former bus driver for the Hurricanes’ rowing team who passed away in November. The ceremony is set for 7:30 a.m. at the Hurricanes’ boathouse.
“Greg was our bus driver for all of our early morning practices since before my time here,” junior Breanna Hayton said. “He was a part of our family, so I think it’s really great that we have an opportunity to honor him and all he did for us.”
Following the dedication, boats will launch into the Indian Creek Waterway to begin the first of two sessions of races scheduled for Saturday.
The Varsity 8+ will open racing at 8:30 a.m., with the second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ following in 15-minute intervals. Saturday’s afternoon session will start at 4 p.m. with the 1V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and Novice boats all participating.
Racing will continue on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m., with the 1V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and Novice boats all competing in separate races.
Miami will honor seniors Kata Horvath and Katie Stanzilis following the conclusion of Sunday’s racing action. The two will be recognized in a special Senior Day ceremony.
Horvath was recruited from Hungary and has been rowing for 11 years. The senior has spent the past four years rowing for the Miami Varsity. Although a decorated small-boat and sculling athlete, Horvath has been racing in the Varsity 8+ at Miami since her freshman year. Horvath strokes the V8+ and has filled that role since fall of 2012. Horvath is set to graduate with an undergraduate degree in biology and marine science with a minor in chemistry. Following graduation, she plans to return to Hungary and pursue her interests in veterinary school this summer.
Stanzilis has been racing with Miami rowing for three years and currently sits in the bow of the second Varsity 8+ boat. She began her career as walk-on novice and has advanced to Varsity. Stanzilis was the bow seat of the Varsity 8+ in the 2012 spring season. She will graduate with an undergraduate degree in mathematics and plans to enroll in graduate school in the fall.
