Rowing Finishes at the Tiger Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. – The University of Miami rowing program completed its final races at the Tiger Invitational on Sunday.
The headwind conditions on Lake Hartwell resulted in significantly slower times compared to Saturday. But the racing remained competitive as some of the nation’s top-ranked crews battled on the water.
Miami’s 1V had an exciting come-from-behind performance on Sunday. The Canes finished strong over the final 500m, crossing the line in second position behind defending ACC and NCAA Champion Virginia.
The Hurricane crew got off the start line in a solid third-place position, but Tennessee continued to push throughout the first 1000m to gain an advantage of as much three-fourths of a length. The Canes charged back over the final fourth of the race course and finished ahead of the Lady Vols by 1.6 seconds. Penn, Indiana and Rhode Island rounded out the field in the race.
The 2V had a close finish but were nipped at the line by Indiana by only three tenths of a second, placing them fifth in the six-crew field. The Canes tested out a new lineup at the Tiger Invitational and the new group crossed the finish in a time of 7:15.9.
Difficult conditions prevented the fair running of the races beyond the two varsity 8+ divisions. Because of the poor weather, official results were not reported for the V4+ and N8+ races.
Miami’s crews return to Miami Beach this week to prepare for their final home regatta of the season. The Canes will host SMU, UCF and Old Dominion on April 27-28. Beyond racing, the Canes have some special events planned for their final home regatta of the season.
The Hurricane rowers will honor Greg Wilson in a boat dedication ceremony prior to the start of racing on April 27. Wilson was a bus driver for the Hurricane rowing program for many years before passing away in November.
On April 28, Miami will honor seniors Katalin Horvath and Katie Stanzilis. The two veterans will compete in their last home regatta with the University of Miami. Both ceremonies will take place at the home of Hurricane Rowing, the Ronald W. Shane Watersports Center in Miami Beach.
This weekend’s regatta will feature Miami’s last races before the Canes travel back to Clemson for the ACC Championship on May 12.
