S&D Adds Four More Medals in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Miami swimming & diving team continued its prolific pace at the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships Friday, capturing four more medals at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Senior Sofia Johansson was the story of the night, earning her third consecutive gold medal at ACC’s in the 100-Yard Breaststroke event. After being seeded second for the finals, Johansson captured first with a time of 1:00.03. The Sweden native became the first woman to swim the event in under one minute in conference history during the 2012 ACC Championships.

“I’m so, so proud of my team tonight,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “Winning three years in a row is so difficult and so rare, and we couldn’t be prouder of her.”

The Hurricane divers added two more medals to Miami’s run, as Carrie Dragland and Kara McCormack captured second and third, respectively, in the 1-meter event. Dragland finished with a score of 313.65, while McCormack ended just behind with a 313.35. Lindsay Lester, seeded fourth after preliminaries, finished fifth in the event with a score of 305.85.

Sophomore Lucy Worrall, who broke the school record in the 200-Yard Freestyle earlier in the tournament, set a new conference record in the 100-Yard Butterfly during morning preliminaries by touching the wall in an NCAA “A” cut time of 51.98 seconds. Though her record would later be broken in the finals, Worrall’s second-place finish and silver-medal performance continued a strong postseason for one of Coach Shefchunas’ brightest stars.

“Lucy had an amazing swim this morning  Tonight’s race was still her second fastest time ever, but obviously we’re disappointed,” Shefchunas said. “Just as I told her, our goal is NCAA’s in three weeks, and that’s what we’re focusing on.”

Though Worrall’s record stood for mere hours before being broken, Shefchunas is excited at the future of her sophomore.

“Just like I told her, she has two more years to take the ACC record back and make it untouchable!”
