S&D Continues Strong Weekend in Atlanta

ATLANTA — The Miami Hurricanes swimming & diving team built on an impressive opening day at the Georgia Tech Invitational Saturday, maintaining its position in third place after a number of strong performances.

The Canes’ entry in the 200 medley relay got the day started off on the right foot, capturing third place with a time of 1:42.11. A balanced lineup of seniors Sofia Johansson and Celeste Degen, alongisde freshman My Fridell and sophomore Lucy Worrall, put on a solid early showing.

Worrall, who had a spectacular first day at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, continued her dominance by taking first place in the 100 butterfly, finishing with an NCAA “B” cut time of 52.86.

“We had a phenomenal night tonight,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “Lucy was the warrior of the meet once again. Midseason, she’s already putting up NCAA-caliber times.”

Fridell, who has shown promise in the early going, took fourth in the event (55.02).

Johansson, who shattered the conference record in the 100 breaststroke as a junior, took first place in her signature event. The Sweden native finished the event with an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:01.40. 

“It was a great time for Sofia at this point in the season,” Shefchunas said. “It was a very solid performance.”

Fellow senior Christine Anderson took fourth with a time of 1:03.06.

Worrall added to her early accolades by taking sixth in the 100 backstroke (55:67), while senior Hannah Kling earned points with a ninth-place finish (57.43). The Canes’ 800 freestyle relay team of Worrall, Anderson, Fridell and freshman Alejandra Gonzalez finished the day on a high note, capturing second place with a time of 7:28.35.

Divers Kara McCormack and Lindsay Lester enjoyed strong days as well, taking second and fifth place respectively in the three-meter event.

“It was a great night for us,” Shefchunas said. “We put up a number of great times, it was exciting to see.”
