Sundararaman Named Academic All-District
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior setter NrithyaSundararaman of the University of Miami volleyball team has been selected tothe 2012 Capital One Academic All-District ® Team, as announced by the CollegeSports Information Directors of America on Thursday. The neurobiology majorleads the Atlantic Coast Conference in assists per set this season andmaintains a 3.90 GPA.
“Nrithyacertainly is a great representative of student-athletes,” head coach NicoleLantagne Welch said. “She is someone who has done an incredible job to balancethe demands of the highest level of Division I volleyball along with all thechallenges of being a student here at the University of Miami, which is anextremely competitive academic institution.”
Onthe court, Sundararaman is third in program history with 2,100 career assistsin 87 matches. She has started 24 contests this season, with a high of 55assists in a five-set win at Clemson on Oct. 19. The setter has distributed theball all over, with five different Hurricanes having at least 190 kills so far.In addition, Sundararaman has posted 199 digs (1.99/set) and 81 total blocks(0.91/set).
TheNaperville, Ill., native plans to attend medical school and hopes to become adoctor after graduation. Sundararaman has thrived in the classroom as aneurobiology major with a 3.90 GPA. She was also named an Arthur Ashe, Jr.Sports Scholar in the May 24 issue of DiverseIssues in Higher Education. The award recognizes “undergraduate students ofcolor who have made academic and athletic achievement a winning combination.”
Sundararamanis one of four ACC student-athletes to be named Capital One AcademicAll-District ®, joining Andrea Beck (Wake Forest), Ali McCurdy (Duke) andBrieanna Merriwether (NC State).
TheAcademic All-District ® Teams include the student-athletes listed in the officialrelease and are divided into eight geographic districts across the UnitedStates and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded AcademicAll-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (DivisionI) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number ofscholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAADivision II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division teamcombines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-teamAcademic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One AcademicAll-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honoreeswill be selected later this month.
Sundararamanand the rest of the first-place Hurricanes (21-4, 13-2) will next face Wake Forest on theroad on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
