Rowing Opens Season at Head of the Hooch

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Under the leadership of head coach Andrew Carter, the University of Miami rowing team will open its season on Saturday at the Head of the Hooch Regatta in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Canes will race in four events, the Championship 8+, Championship 4+, Novice 8+ and Open 8+.

“As usual, the Head of the Hooch Regatta will be one of the largest rowing events in the world this year with nearly 2,000 crews scheduled to race over the two-day event,” Carter said. “For us, there will be tremendous competition from outstanding programs from the ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big East, C-USA and beyond.

“The Hooch is always a test and a great way to gauge our position as we conclude our fall segment. The women on this team have put in their best fall since my arrival and there’s no doubt that they’re looking forward to the opportunity mix it up with some of the best in Chattanooga.”

The two-day regatta, which is the second largest in the country, will be contested on the Tennessee River, spanning 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). All boats will start sequentially and will race against the clock.

This will be the only official fall event for the Canes, who will compete a full spring schedule. The team returns a number of veterans, including All-ACC selections, Breanna Hayton and Kata Horvath. In addition, the program has welcomed a talented group of recruits and novices.

In academic news, Miami rowing received a perfect 100 Graduation Success Rate from the NCAA last month.
