Johansson, Worrall Guide Swimming on Day Two

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Miami swimming team continued its strong run at the All-Florida Invitational Saturday, ending the second day of competition at the Stephen O’Connell Center in third place.

Miami got off to an impressive start with a fifth-place showing from a 200 Medley Relay entry comprised of Hannah Kling, Sofia Johansson, Lucy Worrall and My Fridell (1:46.54). A seventh-place finish from Kathleen Ligon, Amy Wiley, Kayla Smith and Haley Nicholson in the same event (1:48.66) helped the Canes start Saturday off strong.

Katherine Daniels’ second-place finish in the “B” final of the 400 IM (4:30.83) helped head coach Christie Shefchunas’ side regain more ground, while a second-place performance from Worrall in the 100 Butterfly (55.82) put Miami in even better position. Fridell continued an impressive start to her collegiate career with a fifth-place finish in the 100 Fly (56.24).

Shefchunas, who expected a better day two with some of her rising stars performing in signature races, saw Johansson nearly capture first place in the 100 Breaststroke. Unfortunately, the senior’s time of 1:03.51 fell just short of the Gators’ top finisher in the event, Hilda Luthersdottir.

Kling added a seventh-place finish in the 100 Backstroke (57.88) to give the Hurricanes 445 points by day’s end. Miami trails host Florida (780.5) and Florida State (512.5), while Florida Gulf Coast (439), Florida Atlantic (280), North Florida (192), Nova Southeastern (113) and Rollins College (10) make up the rest of the pack.

Miami returns to the final day of competition from the Stephen O’Connell Center Sunday, with preliminary rounds set for 10 a.m.
