CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving teamsopened their season Saturday with the women posting victories over FloridaState University and Florida Atlantic in a dual meet at the Whitten StudentUnion Pool. The Hurricane women edged the Seminoles 148-140, whilesoundly defeating the FAU Owls 160-48.
The men lost to both Florida State and Florida Atlantic.Saturday’s meet marked the first time the women defeated in-staterival Florida State in two years.
“Today’s win was very big for us, “ said Interim Head Swimming CoachJames Sweeney. “We haven’t beaten FSU in two years and I think today’sperformance is an indicator of how our women will perform this season.”
The women were led by junior Julie Kemp, who placed first in the 1000free style and 200 butterfly, and Senior Rhiannon Leier who took firstin the 200 IM and 200 breast stroke. Other individual winners werenewcomer Christy Chech ( 50 free style) and diver Jenny Keim (1-and 3-meterdiving).
The women’s 400-medley relay also had a solid performance.The relay consisted of Kemp, Leier, Chech and sophomore Jennifer Weir.The women’s next meet will be at home against Notre Dame on October16 and the next meet with both men and women will also be at the WhittenStudent Union Pool on October 23.
