CORAL GABLES, Fla.. – Adding to a growing list of accolades achieved during a standout career with the Miami Hurricanes volleyball program, Lane Carico has been named recipient of the 2012 Evelyn Schwartz Award.

“Lane has given so much to our program and is very deserving of this prestigious award,” Head Coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “When you look at who she is as a person, she is someone that her teammates admire and want to listen to and follow, and also someone that has incredible character.”

The Evelyn Schwartz Award, presented annually by the Golden Canes to the university’s student-athlete who best demonstrates outstanding leadership and character, has been awarded annually for the past 16 years. Carico becomes the third-ever recipient from the volleyball team, joining fellow alumni Cassie Loessberg (2010) and Jamie Grass (2004).

Carico, who capped perhaps the most brilliant career in UVolleyball history with her fourth-straight All-ACC selection, was named 2011-12 ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year after the team’s successful run through the NCAA Tournament. The California native was also chosen as a recipient of the prestigious Weaver-James-Corrigan scholarship distributed annually by the Atlantic Coast Conference to those student-athletes looking to pursue a graduate degree.

Her work off the court was matched by her stellar performance in  uniform, where Carico graduates as UM’s all-time leader in kills (1,749) and points (1,973.5), and second all-time in Hurricanes history for digs (1,715).

“Lane is a perfect fit for what the Evelyn Schwartz Award is all about,” Lantagne Welch said.
