March 27, 2012
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami and head women’s basketball coach Katie Meier have agreed to a two-year contract extension that will run through April 30, 2018. Meier, who just completed her seventh season at the helm of the UM program, was named AP National Coach of the Year in 2011 and is coming off arguably the best two-year stretch in the history of the program.
“Katie Meier is a tremendously talented coach who deeply cares about the academic, athletic and social development of our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst. “Her relentless passion and energy has elevated our women’s basketball program to national relevance over the last seven years. We look forward to continued growth in our program and are excited that she will be representing the university and leading our student-athletes for many years.”
Meier and the Canes have posted a 54-11 record over the last two seasons and shared the 2011 ACC Regular Season Championship.
“I truly believe in the University of Miami and particularly in the great vision and integrity of our Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst and our President Donna E. Shalala,” said Meier. “Shawn is a strong leader who understands big-time college athletics and what is necessary to be successful. My staff and I are proud to represent this fine institution and are grateful to be able to continue in our long-term plan for success and championships.”
