BLACKSBURG, Va.–The University of Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams finished the first day of competition at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet with plenty of momentum going into the final day with more quality performances, including a school record, one victory and five top-five finishes.

Sophomore Connor Adams reset his week-old school record in the one mile with a time of 4:11.91. Fellow sophomore Luke Fontaine ran a personal best of 4:18.28 while winning his heat.

Senior Tarika Williams continued her success in the short sprints with another victory in the 60 meters and a new personal-best time of 7.29 seconds. She will compete in the Invitational 200 meters on Saturday.

“Tarika is gaining more and more confidence in the 60m. I look for her to continue to improve in the next few weeks,” said Director of Track & Field and Head Coach Amy Deem.

The Hurricanes’ top-five finishers all managed to do so while setting season bests in their respective events. Senior All-American Devon Hill finished third in the 60-meter hurdles, recording his season-best time of  7.76 seconds in the prelims. Freshman Christian Cook also set a personal best in the finals with a time of 8.06 seconds. Freshman Taniesha Cordell finished fourth in a very competitive field of the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:11.59. Senior Miranda Wilson showed a return to form with a fourth-place season’s-best mark in the weight throw of 18.33m.
