Jan. 23, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference will continue its ACC Sportsmanship Awareness campaign by highlighting Winter Sportsmanship Awareness Week from January 23-29.
Tonight’s women’s basketball matchup between Miami and Virginia Tech at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla. will kick-off the week-long event. The Canes will also participate in two more games during the 2012 ACC Winter Sportsmanship Awareness Week, as the men’s basketball team travels to face Georgia Tech on Tuesday and the women again play host to Wake Forest on Thursday.
During competition from Monday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 29, every league team will showcase its continued dedication to sportsmanship by participating in a pregame handshake prior to each contest. In addition to the teams’ efforts, the conference and member schools will continue to highlight the program to its fans through releases, across social media platforms, videos elements and official websites.
“Sportsmanship remains a priority within the ACC,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “We will continue to highlight and emphasize its importance throughout our league and specifically to our teams and fans.”
Established in 2010, the ACC Sportsmanship Awareness Weeks is a campaign to recognize and promote sportsmanship. During the 2011-12 academic year, three specific weeks have been tabbed as ACC Sportsmanship Awareness Weeks: October 17-23 (Fall), January 23-29 (Winter) and April 9-14 (Spring).
Nearly 40 events will be part of the 2012 ACC Winter Sportsmanship Awareness Week including 12 men’s and 12 women’s basketball games, seven swimming & diving meets, four indoor track and field meets and four wrestling matches.
