No. 21 Miami Takes Down Virginia Tech, 3-0
Sept. 23, 2011
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Seniors Ali Becker and Lane Carico combined for 24 of the team’s 43 kills to lead the No. 21 Miami Hurricanes past Virginia Tech, 3-0, in ACC volleyball action Friday night at Cassell Coliseum. The Canes earned the win on scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20. Miami (10-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) used solid hitting from two seniors to pick up its first ACC win of the year, and its first win ever as a ranked team. The Hurricanes limited Virginia Tech (8-5, 1-1 ACC) to just .162 hitting in the match. Ali Becker (Katy, Texas) registered a match-high 13 kills for the Canes while also registering a match-high tying four blocks. Becker hit at a .407 clip on 27 attacks. Outside hitter Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) collected the double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs, also hitting at a .357 percentage with just one error on 28 attempts. “I thought we played well tonight and Ali stepped it up on both sides,” said UMiami head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “Lane had a great all-around night. As a team, we handled the ball well and our defense picked up as the match went on, and I thought that was a key.” Virginia Tech had just one player reach double-digits in kills behind the play of Justine Record with 12. The UM offense was setup by Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) with a match-high 35 assists, and redshirt freshman Emani Sims (Glenview, Ill.) added four blocks. Libero Ryan Shaffer (San Jose, Calif.) pulled in 13 digs. Miami gets back to the hardwood Sunday, Sept. 25 when it concludes a three-match road swing at the University of Virginia at 12:30 p.m. For more information on the University of Miami volleyball team, please log on to HurricaneSports.com.
