Lane Carico Repeats as ACC Volleyball Player of the Week
Sept. 12, 2011
Greensboro, N.C. – University of Miami senior All-America outside hitter Lane Carico has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 11.
This marks the second straight Player of the Week award for Carico, who has led Miami to a perfect 9-0 record to start the season, and the school’s first AVCA regular season ranking. The Canes entered the poll this week at No. 20. The Hurricanes hosted Florida A&M, Auburn, and No. 18 Oklahoma in the Hurricane Invitational this past weekend, winning all three matches while only dropping one set to Oklahoma.
Carico was named MVP of a tournament for a second time this season. She also picked up MVP honors at the Pepperdine Asics Classic on Sept. 2-3 in Malibu, Calif.
The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native compiled 30 kills on a .258 hitting percentage for 3.75 kills per set and had 32 digs in eight sets. She also had five blocks and four service aces. Carico came up huge in the win over No. 18 Oklahoma with 19 kills and 16 digs to help pull off the come-from-behind upset. It was the first victory over a ranked opponent for the Hurricanes since December 7, 2002, when Miami beat No. 15 Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament.
Carico needs just 56 kills to pass Karla Johnson (2002-05) atop the school’s all-time list. Additionally, she needs just 29 service aces to become the school’s all-time leader, looking to pass Cassie Loessberg (2006-09).
NC State freshman outside hitter Nicole Glass won Freshman of the Week honors for her performance in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Tournament.
