Brittany Viola Wins AT&T National Diving Championship
Aug. 13, 2011
LOS ANGELES – Former University of Miami diver Brittany Viola took gold in the women’s 10-meter platform of the AT&T National Diving Championships on Saturday evening inside Spieker Aquatics Center on the campus of UCLA.
The Orlando native finished 10th at the FINA World Championships just over a month ago in China. However, she laid claim to her second national title Saturday afternoon on the 10-meter board with a score of 348.75. She scored 70-plus points on three of her five dives, including 76.80 on her back 2 ½ with 1 ½ twists in the last round.
“I didn’t know where I was in the standings because I usually just focus on what I can do, but I knew I’d been consistent, so I knew if I could hit my last dive, I’d be in it,” Viola said.
Current UMiami diver and rising sophomore Samuel Dorman finished sixth in the finals of the men’s 3-meter springboard. The Tempe, Ariz. native turned in a score of 419.65 in the final round. He will also compete in the men’s 1-meter finals on Sunday.
Also set to compete on Sunday for the Canes is Lindsay Lester as she takes part in the women’s 3-meter finals.
For long-time Miami Hurricanes head diving coach Randy Ableman, his young team for the upcoming 2011-12 season continues to look promising by turning in solid performance against some of the best divers in the country.
The AT&T National Diving Championships conclude tomorrow.
