GSR Scores Show Continued Success of Miami Athletics – Jan. 12, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — For the third time in the last six years, four teams from the University of Miami Athletics Department have received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for high scores in the Academic Progress Rate (APR).
The Hurricane baseball, football, men’s tennis and women’s golf teams all were among the top 10 percent of schools in multi-year APR scores.
“Congratulations to our baseball, football, men’s tennis and women’s golf programs on their sustained academic excellence,” said UM Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst. “This success starts with dedication and perseverance by our student-athletes, who are able to balance the many pressures of college and still achieve academic success at a higher rate than the majority of their peers. Our coaches and academic staff deserve recognition as well for building upon the strong academic legacy of the Hurricane Athletic Department with another banner year in the classroom.”
It is the second straight year that the Canes football team has earned the recognition. Last year, Miami was the only Bowl Championship Subdivision (BCS) team among the 26 schools recognized that finished ranked in the final USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press poll after the 2009 season.
“The continued academic success of our student-athletes is a priority for our football program,” said football coach Al Golden. “We have a great foundation of excellence and have every intention of building upon it.”
“The University of Miami is tremendously proud that our student-athletes are setting a standard of excellence in academic achievement,” said David Wyman, Associate AD for Academic Services. “We are one of the very few institutions in the country that has improved its Academic Progress Rate every year, for seven consecutive years, in the sports of baseball, men’s basketball and football.
“It is with great appreciation that we accept this honor from the NCAA and we applaud not only our illustrious student-athletes, but the faculty, academic advisors and coaching staff for fostering an environment that cultivates personal, academic and athletic excellence.”
