Carico Selected to COBRA Magazine All-Region Team

Coral Gables, Fla. – Junior outside hitter Lane Carico has been selected to the COBRA Magazine Atlantic South All-Region Team, released Sat., Dec. 4, by officials from COBRA Magazine. COBRA Magazine’s purpose is to celebrate the success of volleyball players of African descent in hopes of encouraging black girls across the country to pursue the sport.
A day after helping Miami challenge “Sweet 16” bound Indiana (who defeated No. 11 seed Tennessee in the second round on Saturday) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) performer Lane Carico was tabbed to her second postseason team of the 2010 campaign.
Carico, a 5-11 native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., finished the 2010 regular season as the only ACC player to tally 400 kill and 400 digs. She ended the campaign with a Hurricanes team-best 471 kills and 38 service aces. From her hitter position on the court, she was second on the UM squad in digs with 454 (3.69 per set), while leading the ACC in double-doubles (25). She notched 16 kills and 14 digs while battling through illness in Miami’s NCAA Tournament match against the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind. on Fri., Dec. 3. She has been key in helping the Nicole Lantagne Welch led Hurricanes to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament.
Also recognized on the All-Region selections were teammates Ariell Cooke and Christine Williamson.
Cooke, a senior from Oakland, Calif., helped UM with 12 kills and a team-high five assisted blocks against the Hoosiers, finishing the 2010 season with a team second-best 83 blocks (72 assisted) and staking 253 kills (2.20 per set). Cooke had a breakout year at the net for the `Canes as she finished the year third on the UM squad for points (312.0)
Williamson, a redshirt junior from Tampa, helped Miami on the year with a team second-best 338 kills (2.77 per set), helping the outside hitter set a new personal season-best record for kills in a single-season. Williamson hit at a .266 clip on the year, while finishing with 50 blocks (42 assisted). She was second on the team in points (367.0).
Also named to the All-Region Team from the ACC was Kadija Fornah (Jr., OH) of Wake Forest, and Lauren Young (Sr., MB) of Florida State.
