`Canes Volleyball Continues Winning Ways
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team hit .356 in the match Friday night, extending the Hurricanes winning streak to three matches with a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-14, 25-16) over visiting Boston College in ACC action inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex. Miami (21-8, 11-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) came out hitting strong in the opener, using 16 kills against just one attack error on 35 swings, clipping the Eagles in the frame, 25-13. For UM, junior outside hitter Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied eight of her match-high 18 kills in the opening set. Meanwhile, Boston College (8-23, 0-18 ACC) posted its highest hitting percentage of the match (.216) in the opener behind six kills from Tsvetelina Dureva. The `Canes got a solid performance on the night from junior middle blocker Ali Becker (Katy, Texas) and senior middle blocker Ariell Cooke (Oakland, Calif.) with eight kills each. Becker registered a match-high .467 hitting percentage (8k-1e-15ta), adding a match-high three blocks (two assisted). Miami recorded 17 kills in the second and third set while holding the Eagles to just .098 hitting in the second frame, and allowing just .135 in the third set. The Eagles were led by Tsvetelina Dureva with seven kills, five digs and an assisted block. Melissa McTighe and Kristen Baader each tallied five kills, and setter Cagla Sen setup 24 assists. Libero Brennan Clark collected a team-high 19 digs. For the `Canes, they were led offensively by Carico with a match-high 18 kills and hitting .405 in the match (18k-3e-37ta). She picked up another double-double performance with 13 digs added to her stat line. Setter Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) put up a match-high 41 assists with two blocks (one solo), and freshman libero Ryan Shaffer (San Jose, Calif.) collected a match-high 22 digs. Miami will face the University of Maryland on Sun., Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. to close out the home regular season at the James L. Knight Sports Complex. The match will be Senior Day for Ariell Cooke and middle blocker Lici McGee (Warr Acres, Okla.). The two student-athletes will be honored prior to the match.
