Hurricanes Finish Strong at Head of the Hooch
Nov. 7, 2010
Chattanooga, Tenn. – The University of Miami rowing team concluded a great weekend of action on Sunday as part of the Head of the Hooch Regatta at Ross Landing Park in Chattanooga, Tenn. This was the second year UM has competed in one of the nation’s largest fall rowing regattas.
Miami fielded three boats in the Open 8+ in its only race of the day, after competing in three races on Saturday.
The Hurricanes’ “A” boat finished fourth in the event, posting a time of 16:34.7 – two seconds ahead of Texas, and three ahead of Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Clemson. The “A” boat was rowed by Breanna Hayton (1), Katie Guest (2), Julia Reisner (3), Chelsea Vandish (4), Kodey Williamson (5), Sarah Medland (6), Katalin Horvath (7), Theresa Recicar (8) and Maria Siemann (coxswain).
For the `Canes, Siemann is in her first year as a coxswain, joining Recicar as former members of the UM novice program in their first few years with the program.
“Day two was a terrific extension of the first day of racing, with all three entries in the Open 8+ performing very well,” said UM second-year rowing head coach Andrew Carter. “This team is extremely young. So, to watch them compete with the level of composure they did was encouraging for both the spring and the future of our program.”
The UM “B” boat registered a time of 17:42.6 behind the strokes of Christina Lighter (1), Taylor Forster (2), Danielle Smith (3), Katie Stanzilis (4), Amanda Vedros (5), Maggie Fragel (6), Courtney Keller (7), Sarah Roper (8) and Stephanie Holtz (coxswain).
The “C” boat was crewed by the team of Michelle Sukert (1), Maryellen Carrigan (2), Angelique Ogilvie (3), Jess Morrell (4), Jennifer Levine (5), Abby Singer (6), Lisa Surowiec (7), Christine Eaton (8) and Catherin Levin (coxswain). Together, they turned in a time of 21:12.0, with many of the rowers competing in their first collegiate event.
“The small core of upper-year student-athletes showed good leadership today, as they were mixed in with our large freshman class in the Open 8+,” said Carter. “That, combined with the excitement brought by our large freshman contingent, proved to be a good recipe for our squad this weekend.
“It was really good to be able to go over the race course against some great teams at the Head of the Hooch, and the positive outcomes – both on and off the water – have everyone returning home reenergized and ready to take the challenge of the next segment of training.”
