Miami Sweeps Boston College in Volleyball, 3-0

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Christine Williamson staked double-digit kills for the fourth time in five matches, helping lead the University of Miami volleyball team past Boston College, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-15), on Sunday afternoon at Power Gym.

Miami (15-5, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved above the .500 mark in league play following Sunday’s win, stringing together three-straight wins in the conference.

Boston College (8-14, 0-9 ACC) hung tough in the opening set, before UM went on a 10-3 run in order to take an 18-11 advantage behind kills from junior Lane Carico and classmate Ali Becker – each registering two kills during the stretch. Miami eventually went on to earn the 25-19 win following two more kills from Carico.

Carico collected eight of her match-high 11 kills in the opening set for the Hurricanes.

UM hit at a .429 clip (14k-2e-28ta) in the second frame, using kills from Williamson and blocks from senior Ariell Cooke. Miami ended the match hitting at a .257 percentage, while holding the Eagles of BC to .000 hitting on the day. The Eagles’ hitting percentage was the lowest posted by a UM opponent on the campaign.

BC was led by Tsvetelina Dureva with seven kills, seven digs and a block. Krystle Higgins added three blocks from her middle blocker position, and libero Kristen Baader collected a match-high 16 digs.

The `Canes were led by Carico’s 11 kills and 15 digs, giving the two-time All-ACC performer her 15th double-double of the year, including five consecutive. That was followed by Williamson’s 10-kills and two blocks (one solo). Williamson hit .500 in the match – a season second-best for the Tampa native.

Redshirt junior setter Katie Gallagher handed out a match-high 37 assists, and freshman libero Ryan Shaffer added 10 digs.

UM steps back onto the courts Fri., Oct. 22 against Duke inside the James L. Knight Sports Complex at 7 p.m. In that match against the Blue Devils, UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch and the Hurricanes program will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the return of Hurricanes volleyball to Coral Gables. Lantagne Welch and her staff will be honoring all former `Canes in attendance at the match, as all are invited to come back for this special event.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the University of Miami is also continuing its drive to support breast cancer awareness through the “Side-Out Foundation” before the `Canes take part in their “Dig Pink” match against Wake Forest on Sun., Oct. 24. Prior to and during the match, the Hurricanes will wear pink warm-up T-shirts, as well as pink ribbons and other apparel during their match against the Demon Deacons.
