Miami Swimmers Place Third at Florida Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming & diving team opened the 2010-11 season with a third place finish in the 2010 All Florida Invitational hosted by the University of Florida at the Stephen O’Connell Center. Miami’s women’s team scored 733.50 points finishing behind Florida (1,032) and Florida State (847.50) while the UM men’s team was sixth.

Carrie Dragland won 1-meter diving with a final score of 298.15. Sam Dorman won 1-meter diving 357.55. Miami won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.19 with Whitney Stephenson, Sofia Johansson, Annika Saarnak and Kelsi Hall.

Miami took the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke with Johansson taking first in 1:03.97 and Hall finishing right behind in second place in 1:04.88.Hatic was fifth in 1:06.41. Saarnak won the 100 freestyle in 50.90.Hall was fourth in 52.04.

Miami’s “A” team of Saarnak, Hall, Stephenson and Johansson finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.49. The “B” team of Katherine Nicholson, Kayla Smith, Hannah Kling and Lauren Jacoby placed sixth with a time of 1:38.37.

Christine Anderson placed sixth in the 500 Yard Freestyle at 5:06.23.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Hall just missed the NCAA “B” cut but finished second in the event in 23.31 missing the cut by 29 seconds.

In 1-meter diving, Lindsay Lester was fourth with a score of 271.00 and Thea Vock was fifth with a score of 270.65. Dorman placed third in 3-meter diving on the men’s side registering 353.65 points. Vock placed second in 3-meter diving with a score of 311.60 while Dragland was third with a score of 300.95. Lester placed sixth scoring 276.55.

In the 400 medley relay, the Hurricanes took second behind the team of Stephenson, Johansson, Saarnak and Hall in a time of 3:45.14. Miami’s “B” team of Kling, Hatic, Deidre Novotny and Lauren Jacoby placed sixth.

Saarnak took second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.31 while Novotny was eighth in 58.19. Stephenson placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 57.69.

The 800 freestyle relay of Stephenson, Saarnak, Jacoby and Ryann Labreche placed sixth in 7:42.74. Stephenson was also sixth in the 200 backstroke in 2:03.36.

In the 200 yard breaststroke, Johannsson and Anderson finished sixth and seventh respectively.

The 400 freestyle relay of Saarnak, Hall, Stephenson and Jacoby placed third in 3:30.27.

Miami returns to action on Oct. 15 when they host FIU at 5 p.m.
