Hurricanes Wrap-Up Greater Louisville Classic
Oct. 2, 2010
The University of Miami cross country teams raced in the 9th Annual Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
Freshmen Connor Adams and Brooke Dovell once again led the men’s and women’s teams, finishing their respective races as the first Hurricanes to cross the finish line.
Dovell’s time of 18:23.88 on the 5K course was followed closely by fellow freshman Lindsi Arrington’s new collegiate personal-best at 18:36.94 – the sixth-best time in school history.
Miami’s veteran runners, Katharine Woodard, Alison Ludwick and Anna Bona rounded out the team’s Top 5.
“The women had a solid effort as Brooke and Lindsi continue to lead the group,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths. “But, we are going to need our spread from one to five to improve.”
On the men’s side, each of the Top 5 finishers ran a season-best time on the 8K course, with Adams crossing the line first at 25:24.09. Greg Kaczka finished second for the ‘Canes at 25:43.26, followed by freshmen Sean Pezzulo and Phil Wood and senior Charles Michel.
Griffiths added, “I thought the men competed very well today. They continue to improve as a unit each race. Greg and Phil had huge races for us today.”
The Louisville men’s team and Grand Valley State’s women’s squad won the team championships. The individual champions were Columbus State’s Meshack Koyiaki (23:30.75) for the men and Neely Spence (16:32.90) of Shippensburg for the women.
“We have made great strides from a year ago, but we need to continue to improve in order to finish the season strong,” added Griffiths.
The Hurricanes return to action on Oct. 15 when they travel to DeLand, Fla. for Stetson’s Hatter Invitational.
