Miami Cross Country Opens Season With Team Wins
Sept. 5, 2010
The University of Miami cross country teams opened their 2010 schedule with team wins at the King of the Hill Challenge at Vista View Park in Davie, Fla. on Sunday.
The race was a 5K for both the men and the women with the men getting things started a 7:45 a.m.
Both teams saw freshmen lead the way. The women’s Brooke Dovell was the individual champion, crossing the finish line in 19:19. Her freshman teammate Lindsi Arrington placed third overall at 20:01.
“Brooke ran an impressive wire to wire win today on a very tough course,” said assistant cross country coach Damon Griffiths. “They women were able to work the hills in their packs and we are excited to see how the season will develop.”
Senior Katharine Woodard finished sixth overall, with veterans Emma Steppe and Anna Bona, the fourth and fifth Miami runners to finish.
Connor Adams, the freshman from Flower Mound, Texas, finished third overall with a time of 16:44. Fellow freshmen Sean Pezzulo (16:52) and Phil Wood (16:58) finished seventh and ninth overall.
Sophomore Greg Kaczka and freshman Michael Coogan rounded out the top five for the men.
“The freshmen men ran well today. Connor and Sean set the tone for the team early in the race and Philip, Greg and Michael were able to close out the victory for us today,” added Griffiths.
The Hurricanes defeated FIU, FAU, Nova Southeastern and Florida Gulf Coast in the Wildside.com hosted event.
The cross country teams will have two weeks to prepare for their next race, the Mountain Dew Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Gainesville, Fla.
“It was great to open up the season sweeping both races,” said Griffiths. “Both teams will need to continue to improve in preparation for our next contest in Gainesville.”
