Shenise Johnson Named to "Wade Watch" List
Aug. 4, 2010
CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami’s Shenise Johnson has been named to the 2010-2011 preseason “Wade Watch” list for The State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year. The 25-member list is made up of top NCAA Division I student-athletes who best embody the spirit of Lily Margaret Wade according to the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
“Shenise is one of the most versatile players in the ACC and one of the best overall players in the country,” said Miami head coach Katie Meier. “She continues to do whatever is takes to help Miami win. All of us in this program are excited that she is earning such prestigious national recognition.”
Johnson led the Hurricanes in the program’s most successful postseason runs in history a season ago, as Miami advanced to the WNIT Championship game and ended the season with a 22-14 record. The 5-11 guard scored 19.0 points and led the ‘Canes with 7.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore and was named First Team All-ACC.
The Henrietta, N.Y. native also was a State Farm All-Region nominee and was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason List. Johnson became the 20th woman at Miami to score 1,000 points and now has 1,069 for her career.
Carolyn Swords of Boston College and Jasmine Thomas of Duke are the only other student-athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to be named to the list.
The State Farm Wade Trophy, now in its 34th year and named after the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University Coach, Lily Margaret Wade, debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women’s national player of the year award in college basketball. This high prestigious award, regarded as the “Heisman of Women’s Basketball,” is organized by the WBCA, in conjunction with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS).
The 2011 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced at the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women’s Final Four, in Indianapolis, Ind.
