Hurricane Athletics Shine Again in NCAA Academic Progress Rate Report
June 10, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – All 18 University of Miami athletics’ teams surpassed the minimum standard needed in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate Report (APR) released today. The minimum standard of 925 represents a score of 92.5 percent as calculated by measuring retention rates and student-athlete eligibility.
“We are extremely pleased with the academic success achieved by all of our teams in this year’s NCAA Academic Progress Rate Report,” UM Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “The academic performance of our student-athletes is a tremendous source of pride for our athletics department. On behalf of our coaches and staff, I extend my sincere appreciation to our student-athletes for their hard work and focus on academic excellence.”.”
The football program was already recognized as having posted a multi-year APR score in the top 10 percent. Miami was the only Bowl Championship Subdivision (BCS) team among the 26 schools recognized that finished ranked in the final USA Today Coaches Poll and Associated Press poll after the 2009 season. UM and Duke were the only two Atlantic Coast Conference football programs recognized. Men’s indoor and outdoor track ranked in the 80th to 90th percentile within its sport nationally.
The current data consists of all student-athletes on each team for the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years. In the six years that the APR has been compiled, Miami has never been subject to any penalties for not meeting the mandated minimum requirements.
Each scholarship student-athlete may earn one point for being eligible and one point for retention per semester for a total of four points per academic year. The total points are then divided by the number of potential points each team could have earned. That percentage is then multiplied by 1000 to provide each team with its APR. As mentioned, the NCAA has established 925 as the cut-off mark. Any team below that standard may be subject to penalties.
