Cary, N.C. – The eighth-seeded University of Miami men’s tennis team fell to top-seeded Virginia, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament on Friday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

The loss snaps a five-match win streak for the 41st-ranked Hurricanes (11-11), while three-time defending ACC champion and top-ranked Virginia (33-1) claims its school-record 33rd win of the season and extends its ACC record win streak to 59 straight versus conference competition.

Miami’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Keith Crowley and Hector Nieto put together a strong match versus Virginia’s 32nd-ranked duo and were tied at 6-all, but were unable to finish as the Cavaliers took the early 1-0 lead with wins at the No. 3 and then No. 1 positions.

Virginia, who has ranked players in all six singles positions and in two of three doubles spots, added its second point with a victory by sixth-ranked Michael Shabaz at No. 1 singles. The Cavaliers increased their lead to 3-0 with No. 55 Jarmere Jenkins’ win at No. 3, and then clinched the match with 107th-ranked Houston Barrick’s victory at No. 5.

“Virginia is playing with a lot of confidence right now and all the credit goes to them,” said Miami head coach Mario Rincon. “We played hard and competed well, but they were better than us today.”

Virginia advances to Saturday’s semifinals to face the winner of today’s Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech match, while Miami awaits the May 4th NCAA selections how to learn its postseason fate. The Hurricanes, who advanced to the Round of 16 last season, have competed in four-straight NCAA Tournaments under Rincon.

ESPNEWS will broadcast the NCAA’s selections to the 64-team field on Tues., May 4, at 5 p.m., while selections to the singles and doubles championships will be released on Wed., May 5, around 6 p.m.
