Reuben Ross Returns to All-ACC Academic Team

April 13, 2010

Greensboro, N.C. – University of Miami men’s diver Reuben Ross was among 40 student-athletes selected to the ACC Men’s Swimming & Diving All-ACC Academic Team, announced on Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford. Candidates for scholar-athlete of the year must have earned a grade-point-average of 3.0 for each of the last two semesters and for their careers, while All-ACC Academic team members must have earned a 3.0 GPA for the fall semester and maintained a 3.0 for the careers, with selection based on athletic merit.

Ross, a senior from Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada), is making his third appearance in consecutive years to the All-ACC Academic Team. The seven-time All-America student-athlete for the Hurricanes is finishing up his degree in Civil Engineering.

Most recently, Ross concluded his storied diving career under UM head diving coach Randy Ableman, by collecting his seventh All-American award, turning in a fifth place finish in the 1-meter springboard at the NCAA Men’s Championships in Columbus, Ohio. He went on to earn an honorable mention All-America award a day later in the 3-meter springboard event.

In the process, he became the first male diver since Miguel Velazquez (2002-05) to capture All-American honors in each of his four years in Coral Gables. Additionally, Ross joins former four-year All-America divers Bryan Gillooly (1995-98) and Chris Mantilla (1995-98) as the only Hurricanes male divers to do so since 1990.

For Ross, it marked his third All-America honor in the 1-meter springboard, also having accomplished the task in 2007 and ’09.

This year’s edition of the All-ACC Academic team features 10 student-athletes who are making their second appearance on the list, and five more who were selected for the third time. Ten of 11 league swimming teams are represented, with Virginia Tech pulling in an ACC-best seven picks, followed closely by Duke with six. Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia each collected three honorees. Maryland and NC State are represented by three student-athletes each, as well as Ross for the University of Miami.

North Carolina junior Chip Peterson was named the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
