Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Canes & Cardinal Classic

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. – Junior Maria Ronderos earned a top 10 finish tying for ninth and the University of Miami women’s golf team posted its best round of the tournament with a 305 to finish sixth at the 2010 Canes & Cardinal Classic at Don Shula’s Golf Resort Tuesday.

Miami posted a three-round team score of 935. Maryland (908) won the team title by 13 strokes over second place Kansas State (921) followed by Akron (922), Florida Gulf Coast (927) and Cincinnati (929) to round out the top five.

Ronderos put together another solid round to register her first top 10 finish of the season as she shot four-over par 76 in the final round and finished 12-over for the tournament. She shot two-over par 38 on both the front and back nine. She made par on 13 of the 18 holes.

Freshman Shelby Gilbert led the Hurricanes on Tuesday shooting three-over par 75. She was two-over on the front nine and one-over par 37 on the backside. She had a birdie on hole 1 and made par on 12 holes. Gilbert tied for 12th place, which was her second top 15 finish of the season.

Junior Christina Hirano tied for 25th after posting a six-over par 78 while sophomore Begona Sarabia birdied three times and shot four-over par 76. Sarabia placed 34th. Freshman Melanie Kleiner round out Miami’s five and shot 89 in her final round.

Miami returns to action April 14-16 at the ACC Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
