Coral Gables, Fla.… The University of Miami men’s basketball team has been busy on the court and also in the community in 2010.

On Jan. 11, the Hurricanes spent the afternoon at the Ronald McDonald house, helping with various projects to beautify the facility.

Then on Jan. 20, the UM men’s basketball team volunteered for several hours at the Miami Rescue Mission helping to serve meals. Before leaving, the players were asked if they would donate shoes to help those in need. Many of the men’s basketball players in attendance responded by literally taking the shoes off their feet to help others.

“Our players are here to get an education and my job is not only to teach them on the basketball court, but also in real-life situations,” said head coach Frank Haith. “I want them to grow as people while they are here. We had our team go out to the Miami Rescue Mission, and those guys took their shoes right off their feet. That tells you about the character of our team.”
