Hurricanes Wrap-Up Season at ACC Championships

CARY, N.C. – The University of Miami men’s and women’s cross country teams ran in their season finale at the Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Championships at the WakeMed Socccer Park Course, Saturday morning.
Junior Chalres Michel was the top-finsher once again for the Hurricanes – as he has been in all six races this season – with a time of 26:12.6, his second-best effort on an 8k course on the season. Miami’s lone senior Julio Bonilla was the second team member to cross the finish line at 27:13.9. He was followed by sophomore Matthew Wilson (27:24.1) and sophomores Greg Kaczka (27:43.9) and Reginald Buford (28.33.4).
As a team, the men finished with 395 points, while NC State claimed the title with 56 points. Emil Heineking won the individual championship in a time of 23.15.5.
The women’s team saw Katharine Woodard cross the line first – for the second consecutive race – at 23:23.9. It was the first time this season that the women ran on a 6k course. Sophomore Anna Bona was the next Hurricane to finish at 23.53.4. She was followed by sophomore Janet Price (24:01.6) and juniors Emma Steppe (24:01.6) and Caitlin Knapp (24:10.0).
Florida State won the team title with 37 points and saw its own Susan Kuijken win the individual title in 19:39.3. Miami finished with 380 points.
The ACC Championships was the final event for the Hurricanes in the 2009 cross country season. However, many of the runners on both the men’s and women’s team will participate on the 2010 indoor and outdoor track and field teams. Miami’s first indoor competition is scheduled for Jan. 15 when the `Canes travel to Lexington, Ky. For the Kentucky Invitational.
