Lane Carico named Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Oct. 21, 2009

Sophomore outside hitter Lane Carico has been named the Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending October 18.

It was Carico who lead the way for Miami as the ‘Canes went 2-0 on the week in collecting wins on the road against ACC foes Boston College and Maryland. Carico led the charge collecting a .370 hitting percentage through two matches. Carico blasted 43 kills on 92 swings this week, including hitting a season second-best .423 clip in Miami’s 3-1 win at Boston College. The sophomore outside hitter collected her eighth straight double-double against the Eagles, until her streak was stopped two days later at Maryland. However, another streak remained as Carico ripped off 18 kills to give her nine consecutive matches with 15-or more kills. She averaged 6.14 kps and 2.71 dps on the week while also claiming three blocks (assisted).

Carico leads the ACC in kills with 323, and has already collected CVU.com National Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week honors (Oct. 5-11). In claiming that distinction, Carico set a new school record for kills in a match with 36 coming against Clemson (Oct. 2.) on 83 attacks. Carico bested the old mark of 31 previously set by Karla Johnson (vs. Wake Forest – 10/22/05). She also set a new record at UM for points in a match, posting 37.5 against Clemson, adding a service ace and a block assists to go along with her 36 kills.

On Oct. 4 against Georgia Tech, Carico became the first player in UM history to register back-to-back 30-kill performances, picking up an even 30 in Miami’s 3-2 win. She is just the second player in UM history, joining Karla Johnson, to post two (2) 30-kill matches in the same season, as Johnson eclipsed the 30-kill plateau twice in 2005.
