Miami Volleyball Too Much for Boston College, 3-1

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Sophomore Lane Carico tallied a match-high 25 kills and classmate Christine Williamson exploded for 12 more in helping the University of Miami to a 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18) over host Boston College in an ACC volleyball matchup Friday evening inside Power Gymnasium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Miami (11-7, 4-4 ACC) fell in a tough first set where neither team wanted to relinquish the all-important opening frame. UM hit a .316 clip (15-3-38) while taking advantage of eight BC attack errors. Boston College (11-8, 1-7 ACC) countered with timely kills and service aces down the stretch for the opening set victory, 26-24.
In the second, the Hurricanes hit a match-high .351 percentage as a team, posting 17 kills in the set on 37 swings. They countered on defense by limiting the Eagles to a match-low .030 hitting mark. Behind the efforts of Carico, UM was able to bolt out to an early lead it wouldn’t relinquish in the 25-12 win.
With the match tied at a set apiece, UM once again took control early in the set, getting an early kill from freshman setter Nrithya Sundararaman, as well as assists, and more well-placed shots from sophomore outside hitter Christine Williamson.
Williamson finished the night with a team second-leading 12 kills.
With Miami out in front, the Eagles surged back behind the effort of Taylor Williams, leading all Eagles with 24 kills in the match. However, the early 18-10 deficit was too much, and UM held on for the 25-18 triumph in the third set.
Miami committed a match-low two errors in the final set as Carico blasted seven kills, and junior Ariell Cooke hammered home two kills and three blocks en route to the 25-18 win, and the match victory for the Hurricanes. Also giving valuable points in the fourth set for the `Canes was freshman Lizzie Hale, serving up two aces in the frame.
Boston College was led by Williams’ 24 kills and two blocks (assisted). Morgan Fry-Pasic was just outside the double-digit mark for kills, posting nine on the night. She also had six digs. Setter Krissy Mussenden had 37 assists and 16 digs for a double-double effort.
As for Miami, Carico led all players with 25 kills while adding 13 digs and two blocks (assisted), jumping her double-double streak to eight matches. Williamson poured in double-digit kills (12) for the fourth time in five matches, while teammate Cooke placed nine kills and six blocks (five assists).
Lizzie Hale posted a career-high 18 digs for UM, and Sundararaman had 49 assists and three blocks (two assists). Cassie Loessberg had 11 digs and two assists from her libero position.
As a team, UM hit .308 on the night, eclipsing the .300-mark for the fourth time this year–and the second time in three ACC matches.
The Hurricanes wrap up their four-match road stretch Sunday, Oct. 18 when traveling to College Park, Md., to face the University of Maryland Terrapins at 1 p.m. It is a return “home” for UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch as she served four years as a volleyball student-athlete at Maryland from her setter position.
