Miami Volleyball Charges Past Wake Forest, 3-1

Winston-Salem, N.C. – Lane Carico had a match-high 22 kills while Christine Williamson and Lici McGee added 14 to help lead the University of Miami volleyball team past ACC foe Wake Forest, 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-18) at Reynolds Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C. With the win, the Hurricanes collect their first ACC road win of the season.
Miami (10-6, 3-3 ACC) stood tied with Wake Forest in the opening, 16-all, until sophomore middle blocker Ali Becker placed a kill, followed by a pair of blocks from Becker and freshman setter Nrithya Sundararaman. That gave UM the lead, 18-16, as the Hurricanes held on for the 25-20 win in the opener.
Despite trailing early in the second, Miami used a kill from sophomore outside hitter Christine Williamson to jump-start an 8-0 run that ended with block assists from Williamson and Becker. Becker would finish the evening with a career-high 10 assisted blocks (10 total blocks).
Wake Forest (6-11, 4-2 ACC) was limited to a .167 hitting performance in the second set, while the Hurricanes amassed a match-high .455 clip on 16 kills, one attack error and 33 swings.
In the third frame, the Demon Deacons kept the tally tight as the set would tie six times–the last at 24, before a kill from WFU’s leading kills performer Kadija Fornah, and an attack error charged to the Hurricanes, gave the Demon Deacons the set victory, 26-24.
In the fourth, another timely Williamson kill started a 4-0 run that erased an early UM deficit, giving Miami the lead at 8-6. Wake Forest battled back to put together a 3-0 run and claim a 10-9 lead, but a kill from sophomore Lane Carico–the ACC and CVU.com Player of the Week, preceded an attack error charged to WFU in order for the `Canes to grab a slim, 11-10 advantage.
With match later tied at 14, UM used two kills apiece from Carico and middle blocker Lici McGee as part of a 6-2 Miami run to move ahead comfortably, 20-16. The match ended with a kill from Carico, followed by another Wake Forest attack error–one of nine in the set.
Wake Forest was led on the evening by Kristen White with 17 kills, while Fornah added 16 kills and four digs. Also touching double figures was Andrea Beck with 11 kills and two solo blocks.
Miami was aided by Lane Carico’s third consecutive 20-or more kills performance (fifth of the season), as the Manhattan Beach, Calif., native topped the charts with 22 kills and 22 digs, giving her a team-best sixth consecutive double-double.
Beside Carico in double figures was Williamson with a career-high tying 14 kills, matching her output from the last outing against Georgia Tech. McGee matched Williamson’s effort with a career-high 14 kills and two block assists. Becker also touched double-digits in kills for the sixth time this year with 12 kills and a match- and career-best 10 blocks.
Setter Nrithya Sundararaman set the offense with 53 assists, five digs and six blocks (assisted). Senior libero Cassie Loessberg paced the defensive exploits for the Hurricanes with a match-high tying 22 digs.
