University of Miami Releases Statement on Myles Brand

Coral Gables, Fla. –

Statement from University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala on the passing of NCAA president Myles Brand.

“Myles Brand was a courageous educator. He brought his high integrity and commitment to students to the NCAA presidency. He demanded that higher education substantially improve their academic standards and progress of student athletes. He was a good friend and wonderful colleague. We will miss his leadership.”

Statement from UM Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt on the death of NCAA President Myles Brand.

“The University of Miami Hurricanes family is saddened by the loss of NCAA President Myles Brand. He brought a great deal of respect and credibility to college sports by emphasizing the importance of academic achievement to a successful athletics program. At the same time, he also understood the vital role athletics play in creating a rich experience for universities and their communities. He will be greatly missed, and all NCAA programs will be forever indebted to his vision and integrity.”
