Hurricanes Set to Host Greentree Invitational

Sept. 3, 2009

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami cross country teams will open their season when they host five schools at the Greentree Invitational at Larry and Penny Thompson Park on Friday, Aug. 4., beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The five South Florida schools that will be attendance will be FAU, Nova Southeastern, Florida Gulf Coast, St. Thomas and FIU.

Last season in this event, the women took the team title with the men finishing in third. The women, led by sophomore Anna Bona will have a total of nine student-athletes competing and will have an experienced squad as there are only two newcomers competing on Friday.

The men’s team, who lost their top runner from a year ago, Ryan Woodlee to graduation, will have a much younger squad with only two of the six scheduled to race having collegiate experience. Those two, Austin Rector and Matthew Wilson are just sophomores, but will be looked upon to bring leadership to the team.

The Greentree Invitational which has been held Tropical Park in years past will make the move to Larry and Penny Thompson Park for 2009 season.

The women are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m while the men are set to get under way at 6:10 p.m. The men will be running a four mile race with the women running a 5K.
