Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening Statement…
“To leave their legacy and their mark; It is their first ACC Title in 20 years…We did it together each and every game; Built momentum and played together as a team throughout the course of the season through some adversity, and I’m so proud. This game was very typical in the sense of being able to have everybody involved and everybody to contribute, and it was just a tremendous team win.”
On having a 1 seed in the ACC Tournament being a prerequisite for having a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament…
“I don’t think you can count on anything because you’re not in that room with the selection committee. We just want to keep getting better and keep building. Our next task at hand, we just finished the regular season, is the ACC Tournament. Put yourself in the best position possible, and that is what we are fighting to do. We want to keep getting better and keep building the momentum that we started.”
On whether she felt the game winning shot at FSU would decide the ACC…
“I’m not sure I would say that, but I know whenever KC gets the ball, and she’s out there and the clocks low I have total confidence that she can knock down that shot, and it was a very exciting moment and knew that there were going to be other big shots that she was going to knock down as well.”
Marissa Coleman
on how serious the team was taking it to be the regular season champs…
“We were taking it very seriously. That shows a team that was playing the best the entire season in the whole conference, and I think that’s what we did.”
Marah Strickland
On playing as a team…
“We play so well together as a team that at any given moment you know the ball is always moving and it’s going to find you… Playing with KC and playing with Marissa, I never feel like I’m not going to be found out there.”
Miami Head Coach Katie Meier
Opening Statement…
“I don’t think we made a statement defensively to start the game like we wanted to. They’re an awesome team. They are one of the most fluid offensive teams not just in the conference but in the nation…I’m talking about in women’s basketball across the country and even in recent years they are very fluid. They make the extra pass. They had five people in double figures and shared the basketball very well. I felt that, defensively, we had to make a statement early. We had to say we’ll give you these shots, but you’re not getting this and that. I think we gave up the interior too much to start the game, and that opened up a lot. They start off going inside, and that opens up a heck of a lot for those special players out on the perimeter, and we didn’t take inside away to start so that hurt us.”
On whether winning the regular season title should give them a 1 seed in the tournament…
“I think they’re great, and I’m not just saying that as a fan of the ACC…Look at how they’re playing lately, and look at the teams they are stacked up against. I don’t know how you solve them…”
Lemise James
On how critical the first five/ten minutes were in the start of the second half to make it a single digit game, and how that would’ve changed things…
“I think the momentum would have definitely changed…They’re such a good team that if you give them any daylight they’re going to execute.”
On if Maryland’s passing game is underrated…
“Me, personally, I think we have seen better passing, but when we are on our heels and not communicating on defense as well as we did in the last three games, then they will look like a great passing team…If we would’ve defended well it would’ve been better.”
On how the season has obviously not been what she wanted…
“We can still write our own story; Go to the ACC and have a Cinderella story. That’s what I’m hoping for.”
On how the future looks for the basketball team…
“They will only get better.”
