Hurricane Swimmers Win Big At Vanderbilt, 186-74

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The University of Miami swim team took 11 of 12 individual events and both relay events as the Hurricanes won easily at Vanderbilt, 186-74, Friday afternoon at the Centennial SportsPlex in Vanderbilt’s first home meet in 15 years. Miami’s 200-yard medley and freestyle relay teams each won in convincing fashion while four individual swimmers, Ryann Labreche, Kirsten Pomerleau, Britta Boesing and Kelly Peloquin all picked up two wins apiece to give UM its first win of 2008.
“This meet was a good chance for the girls to swim off events,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “It was a nice way to finish off our Christmas training and we can now focus on preparation for the ACC Championships next month.”
Labreche’s two wins came in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events, finishing with a time of 1:54.24 in the 200-yard event to edge out Vanderbilt’s Leigh-Ann Axt by less than a second before recording a time of 5:07.39 in the 500-yard free, winning by seven seconds over second-place Jennifer Molchan.
Pomerleau took home the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle events in 59.18 and 52.74 respectively while Peloquin won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.88 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.65, beating out three of her teammates for the win. Miami also had the top-four finishers in the 100-yard breaststroke event with Boesing leading the pack with a time of 1:06.92. She also came away with the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:09.99.
With the win, Miami improves to 6-2 in dual meets this season while Vanderbilt drops to 0-6 on the year.
Three other Hurricanes picked up wins in individual events, with Elisabeth Torres winning the 50-yard free in a time of 24.91, Emerson Davis taking the 1000-yard free in 10:45.70 and Annika Saarnak cruising to a win in the 200-yard IM with a finish of 2:12.53.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Boesing, Saarnak, Pomerleau and Magdalena Waszkiewicz came in at 1:48.65 while UM’s “B” team of Deidre Novotny, Tina Rau, Marina Dadic and Torres placed second at 1:52.23. In the 200-yard freestyle relay event, Davis, Novotny, Peloquin and Katie Eason edged out a win with a time of 1:40.01.
Axt gave Vanderbilt its only win of the meet, claiming a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly event at 57.94.
VU’s swimming program was dropped in 1994 due to inadequate facilities and was restarted last season.
UM’s swimmers will return to the water later this month when the team hosts Florida International at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m.
